Friday Lyric Quiz, 438 (In Which We Remember Mr. Wizard)

Making My Early Rotation

It’s an exciting time of year as the new fall TV season has kicked off. Though Hulu and  iTunes (not to mention less scrupulous methods) have changed they way people watch television, the beginning of the season remains full with familiar sentiment.

People decide their new favorite shows and hope they survive the competitive playing field, networks watch pet projects quickly move to “the bubble,” and returning favorites emerge from cliff hangers (sometimes the worse for wear).  More on all this later as I plod my way through the premieres, but I wanted to devote this week’s lyric-quiz theme to the subject of the small screen.

Referencing another pop-culture entity in one’s music can be a fun expression of a meta concept. It can be an inside joke (See: “Moby, you can get stomped by Obie [Trice]”). A chance to demonstrate just how clever you might be. Other times, it can come off as a desperate attempt to appear hip and relevant (See: Nickelback mentioning “Cribs.”).

All of today’s lyrical clues mention either a “real-life” TV show by name (or a fictional character from within that show).  Name the song and the artist.  For bonus virtual points, name the show the character comes from (when applicable – numbers 5, 8, and 9).  Enjoy the weekend – I’ll hopefully watching an Alien Ant Farm concert.  Yeah, you heard me.
