Friday Lyric Quiz, No. 455 (The Erin Go Bragh Edition)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone! Today’s quiz honors bands and solo artists from the Emerald Isle but first, a quick flashback of a story.

In college, I dated a raging gaelophile. He would go to Irish pubs and ask when the hat would be passed so he could donate money to the IRA. He was upset my parents had a Union Jack tea towel. And he didn’t like me listening to any pop music unless it was Irish. He especially disliked the English acts that were among my favorite (Duran Duran, The Police). Suffice to say that I listened to a lot of U2 and Cranberries that year.

Anyway, his all-time favorite band was The Pogues, so imagine my surprise this week when I was researching Irish musical artists for this quiz and didn’t see their name mentioned anywhere. WHY, you ask? Because while Shane MacGowen, the snaggle-toothed, whiskey-drinking, marble-mouthed lead was born in Ireland, he transplanted to London, where he met his bandmates. Meh God. A year of that rubbishy music for nothing.

Spoiler alert: The Pogues are not part of this quiz.
